The complete weaning guide

14 August 2026

The three weaning stages in one place: 4–6 months, 6 months and 12 months. Pace, textures, amounts and milestones.

From 4–6 months — Getting started with solids

A very smooth, steamed purée, with no salt or sugar. One new vegetable every 3 days, and watch closely.

Mealtime basics

A very smooth, steamed purée, with no salt or sugar. Introduce one new vegetable every 3 days to spot any reactions. Milk remains the basis of nutrition.

  • Bottle: about 180 ml
  • Purée jar: about 50 g
  • Handy rule: bottle = 230 − jar (in ml)

Week by week

Week 1

One vegetable at a time, a new vegetable every 3 days.

Lunch (12 pm): 1 bottle + 1 jar of vegetable purée.

Week 2

Snack time begins. Potato thickens the lunch purée.

Lunch: 1 bottle + 1 jar (vegetables + ¼ potato).
Snack (4 pm): 1 bottle + 1 jar of cooked fruit.

Week 3

Lunch: 1 bottle + 1 jar (vegetables + potato + 1 tsp blended meat, poultry or fish).
Snack: 1 bottle + 1 jar of cooked fruit.

Week 4

Infant cereal OR potato — not both in the same meal.

Lunch: 1 bottle + 1 jar (vegetables + ⅓ tsp infant cereal + protein).
Snack: 1 bottle + 1 jar of cooked fruit.

Week 5

The jar is complete: vegetable, starch, protein, fat.

Lunch: 1 bottle + 1 jar (vegetables + cereal + protein + ¼ tsp raw rapeseed oil or butter).
Snack: 1 bottle + 1 jar of cooked fruit.

Keep in mind

  • Pace: 1 new food per day, never two on the same day. Watch the skin and stools.
  • Allergens: introduced early and regularly, in the morning, one at a time. Do not delay out of caution.
  • Hydration: from 4 months, 20–30 ml of still water per meal. Freely from 6 months.
  • Equipment: steamer, blender, fine sieve, ice-cube trays to freeze 30 g portions.

No salt · No sugar · No honey before 1 year · Fully cooked

From 6 months — Building variety

Legumes in the purée and a yogurt at snack time. Texture moves from smooth to mashed.

What changes

We introduce legumes into the vegetable purée, and a plain yogurt at snack time.

A typical day

Lunch (12 pm)

1 bottle, then 1 jar of purée: vegetables + infant cereal OR potato + 1 tsp protein (meat, fish, egg or blended legumes) + ¼ tsp oil or butter.

Snack (4 pm)

1 bottle, and/or a plain yogurt with no added sugar + 1 jar of cooked fruit.

What's new

  • New texture: move from smooth to mashed — blend less, leave a few soft lumps that melt on the tongue.
  • Legumes: red lentils and chickpeas, well cooked then blended.
  • Dairy: plain yogurt, fromage blanc or petit-suisse at snack time.

From 12 months — Introducing dairy

Cheese, yogurt, fromage blanc and whole cow's milk come in. Time for soft chunks.

What changes

Introduction of dairy: cheese, yogurt, fromage blanc, and whole cow's milk.

A typical day

Lunch (11 am – 12 pm)

1 bottle (infant formula or cow's milk) + 3 tsp cereal, then 1 jar: vegetables + 2 tsp protein + ½ tsp oil or butter.

Snack (3 – 4 pm)

1 bottle or 1 dairy product (cheese, milk…) + 1 jar of fruit + 1 dairy product (cheese, yogurt, fromage blanc).

Keep in mind

  • Dairy: a plain dairy product at snack counts toward the 500 ml. Not sweetened, flavored or low-fat.
  • Texture: soft chunks mashed with a fork, and sticks to grab independently.
